The ZWO ASI485MC (color) 3840×2160 camera is one of the latest OSC planetary cameras released by ZWO in 2021. Packed with the Sony sensor IMX485, this camera has some very great highlights. Including a large resolution of 3840 * 2160, compatible with USB 3.0 interface and so on. Great full depth of 13ke- (full well depth), extremely high sensitivity and super low readout noise etc.

1/1.2 inch 8MP backlit sensor

ASI485MC shares the same pixel size of 2.9um with ASI462MC, but when it comes to resolution, ASI485MC is 4 times larger than ASI462MC. The total number of pixels is 8.28 million. The length and width of the sensor are 11.13mm * 6.26mm. The diagonal is 12.86 mm.

An advantage of the backlit CMOS structure is reduced readout noise and improved sensitivity. In particular, Sony uses STARVIS™ technology on the IMX485 sensor, which gives excellent visibility in low-light conditions. You can achieve a very high light efficiency when making astrophotos, on the other hand you can also achieve high image quality in the areas with visible light and near infrared light.

This, combined with the large field of view of the large sensor size, makes the ASI485MC ideal not only for solar, lunar and planetary imaging. But can also be used as a live streaming camera or all-sky camera to observe or monitor the weather conditions. It makes the camera applicable in multiple situations.

HCG Mode

ASI485MC has a built-in HCG mode which can effectively reduce the high gain readout noise. And can maintain the same wide dynamic range as you’d expect at low gain. When the gain is 80, the HCG mode is automatically turned on. The exquisite noise falls off a cliff, while the dynamic range can still reach nearly 11 stops. The minimum read noise is 0.7 e.
